So today was going to be a great day as i went to my Yamaha dealer to trade my old R6 for a nice shiny new R1. Every thing went well sorted out paper work and a great price and i was well pleased with the money they offered me for mine.

Until they HPI my r6 and it came back as a CAT D write off. At which point i was god smacked as i brought it 3 years ago from the largest bike dealers (and is a main dealer)in the area who failed to pass this information on to me.

So now I'm really  pissed off not only did i pay top dollar for my R6 and even when i asked them was there anything wrong with it they said NO. It is now not worth anything and my insurance has been void for 3 years. :rant2: :rant2:

But when i rang there other sister company they both said they never deal with insurance write offs and every bike is HPI before sold.

The company i brought it off basically want nothing to do with it.

Has any one got any advise befor i :club: :club: :club:

I thought Cat D was just panel and paint, most are repairable, dont mean it's bent?,if it was registered as a Cat D I thought it was listed on the logbook(V5)

I once whent to look at a blade with a friend who was looking for a new bike, the bike looked ok but when my mate HPI'd it over the phone it came back as a cat d. the poor owner was gobsmacked. He'd bought it from a reputable main dealer in suffolk. Same as you he had no idea the bike was a write off and the dealer never told him. He rang the shop the next day and explained what he'd been told. They gave him a full refund and let him keep the bike.
My mate bought it off him a couple of weeks later for peanuts.

Dont let the dealer get away with it. Pay for your own HPI and take the report into them and make plenty of noise. If that doesn't work try trading standards

you've been happy with it for 3 years so it must have been repaired properly disapointing you wont get what to thought you would but sell it private and the new R1 will mint for the summer.

yeh do your own check as kermit says, then take it to the dealer, and dont ask, demand, if you get no luck go to trading standards, theyr usually pretty good, specially with vehicles.
The fact that he has had it for 3 years has nothing to do with the fact that information was kept from him when he bought it.

no only CAT B and CAT C are registered on your log book.

Yes ive been happy with it for 3 years and Yes it looks like it been repaired properly.

I'm not worried about it being a CAT D the fact is its only worth 66% of the value and no traders will take it as apart exchange. And the company i brought it off so I'm told always HPI any of there bikes before they sell it, and i asked they said it was all OK. I would sell it privet but i would have to advertise it as a CAT d, i couldn't sell it to some one no knowing as I'm not that type of person....

I think the least the dealer could do is give you the trade in price of the bike. You definatley need to get a report though to prove the bike was a cat d when you bought it

let me take a guess, it was LINGS wasnt it....Ive had a bad experience with them. they do NOTcheck trade ins properly to see the history. I bought an early fireblade from Lings in harleston (when they traded from the small shop), it was at vertised as a P reg (powder coated frame, sparkle painnt, yes i know alarm bells should have been ringiing) and i trusted them as they are a large dealership. Few weeks laater, i was wondering why the speedo over read by a country mile, and i was getting (according to the milometer) 280miles per tank. Also when looking at the bike from the side in the cold light of day, the read sub frame seemed to be far to close to the rear wheel.

Turns out that the over reading was due to the first years fireblade reading the speed off the front wheel, my 1996 fireblade had a 1992 blade engine (missing one mounting bolt and the other dangerously close to falling out, so it had the wrong engine but the speedo pick up from a 1996 model (off the front sproket nut), the frame was a 1996 modelbut the sub frame and shock from a 1992 and body work off another. The bike was a dangerous piece of crap, I was going to brno 6 weeks later so was gutted, i threatened trading standards and they, then offfered me a 1997model, mint with FSH (seems they knew they were in the wrong) but upon picking up the bike the FSH had, guess what, yup, dissapeared,

Lings are not a bad company but their part exchange system is rubbish and they should not trust people who part exchange at their word, they need to be proactive and finding out a bikes history.

I will never use them for bikes again (and i friend has also suffered over a 2nd hand bike)

hmmmmm

hope you sort yours out to your satisfaction

its not good that a dealer done that :club: BUT cat D aint to bad really i have had two over the years and nobody would of known, it could just be plastic panel damage and its classed as cat d, and damage to forks/wheels/frame/swinging arm it would then be cat b/c.

get your own report and it should say what date it was classed as cat d? if you have your receipt and it was cat d before the date you brought it cant see a dealer not sorting you out, i would kick up one hell of a fuss and name and shame on the web and write/email mcn and other bike mags.

good luck keep us informed :good:

Yes it was LINGS in lowestoft

and i do now have a copy of the report and it was written off when it was 3 months old and i brought it in 2008. i still have the receipt which also stats nothing about being a write off. Surely when they did the 127 point check (what ever they call it) a HPI check would be included???
